You’re frustrated at interior design. I get it. Me, too. And now I know why. It’s because interior designers make their profession overly complex. They teach rules upon rules, but when that rule is twisted or broken by a “professional,” as they constantly are, there always follows a justification. Like every defect of an artist’s work was done on purpose and with special meaning.

“Oh, that big plant on a tiny table looks great because it’s so much bigger. You can tell it was not done by accident, and the designer wanted to create a focal point out of it.” Fine. But not helpful. 

You’re looking for the few rules that always work rather than guidelines you’re encouraged to break and “find inspiration” and “experiment with it.” Like being told to learn the drums by spending hours pounding away until you find your rhythm. I want to give you a shortcut.

I want tried-and-true rules to follow. Later, when I feel comfortable breaking them, I’ll do that.

This is my interior design tip sheet to solve my own problem, and I hope yours, too.

It was born from the knowledge I’ve gained while in the short-term rental industry. It’s the culmination of all those confusing tips and tricks “professional” interior designers teach. But, most importantly, it’s a work in progress. This is a live document that I’m constantly making updates to as I design my own Airbnbs. This is not a professional guide. If you want a professional design, hire a professional designer. This tip sheet gives you the basics, which, in my estimation, is good enough to design a space in form and function that exceeds 90% of existing short-term rentals.
