Airbnb news july 2017

In this monthly piece, I’m going to focus on the fun and interesting news coming out about Airbnb. I’ll mostly be ignoring news from governments and special-interest groups about regulation, litigation, taxes, housing crisis, etc. This post covers Airbnb news July 2017.

Hilton’s new millennial hotel chain takes on Airbnb

If there is one thing Airbnb is missing, it’s the thing they promote most: human connection. This is because most listings are entire units. Hotels have an advantage over Airbnb in this arena because they own large buildings where people stay rather than spreading people out all over. And, those hotels are already where people want to go. If a hotel were to create a hotel alternative where someone could get a private room and a shared (clean) kitchen and bathroom, but large common space and even events, this would win for a lot of solo travelers.

This augmented reality concept is like a real-life video game tutorial for your Airbnb rental

This is cool! Like a virtual tour of your home with relevant ‘sticky notes’ in places like washer and dryer, thermostat, and TV remote. The idea was created by a designer not affiliated with Airbnb.

Canceled visit? That’s OK, Airbnb will let you post a review

Hosts are not going to like this one. But, in fairness, it is the right move. I’m surprised it took this long. In the past, it was an easy exit route for property managers because guests didn’t know any better until after the fact and it seemed like the right thing to do in their minds (that is, to cancel the reservation early). I agree with this move. I hope more moves like this are made on Airbnb’s behalf so that I don’t see 50% 5-star listings, 40% with no reviews and 10% with bad reviews. I would love to see a more even proportion. A 4-star home shouldn’t be considered the plague, like it is now with their 5-star or bust system.
