Fun + Unique Airbnb News, April ’18

airbnb news april 2018

In this monthly piece, I’m going to focus on the fun and interesting news coming out about Airbnb. I’ll mostly be ignoring news from governments and special-interest groups about regulation, litigation, taxes, housing crisis, etc. This post is Airbnb news April 2018.

Don’t Blame Airbnb for Rising Rents

100 to 1 there are articles about cities regulating Airbnb over articles like this.

I’m glad the economists finally have looked at the numbers. I’ve been saying the same thing for years. I’m familiar with SF and there are about 350k units available for rent. At the highest point, there were 10k Airbnb’s. That represents <3% are being taken off the marked IF all 10k were otherwise long-term rented units which we know is not the case. Maybe, MAYBE half would have been otherwise long-term rented. Why not encourage Airbnb (ie more tourists equals more taxes for gov’t, more customers for local business, etc.) AND build more housing? The solution to regulate a company bringing money to your city is ludicrous. Most cities would give anything to see the tourism numbers like SF, NYC, and Paris.

I’ve been saying it for years, but now the economists are looking at the numbers and even I’m surprised how insignificantly Airbnb contributes to increased rents!

At the end of the day, if Airbnb encourages more travel by making it more affordable, that is a huge win for every single person on this planet.

This is why I’m so attracted to Airbnb. Even though the company is already huge, they will be 10x bigger. They’re going to make travel safe, fun, affordable, and doable for everyone.
